National Bank of Ukraine Introduces International Bank Account Number IBAN

From April 1, 2019, Ukrainian banks will open new IBAN accounts to customers, and banks, on their own, will be changing thecurrent account numbers from April 1 to October 31, 2019 in accordance with the requirements of this standard, while retaining the current number of analytical accounting. It is reported by the press service of the NBU.

The relevant standards are contained in the NBU resolution dated January 28, 2018 No. 162 “On the Introduction of an International Bank Account Number (IBAN) in Ukraine”.

The use of IBAN will become mandatory for customers of all banks in Ukraine when performing money transfers in both national and foreign currencies, including cross-border transfers. That is, all transfers will be made only using IBAN.

Between April 1 and October 31, bank customers in the details of settlement documents will be able to indicate both a valid account number and a bank code, as well as a number in the IBAN standard.

It is also noted that the use of IBAN by bank customers will allow the use of QR codes in the future, which will contain information on IBAN, to simplify the payment of bills and exchange payment information.

The rules for the formation of an international bank account number (IBAN) in Ukraine (IBAN Registry: 2009, NEQ) DSTU-N 7167: 2010 approved by the order of the State Committee of Ukraine on Technical Regulation and Consumer Policy of October 11, 2010 No. 454.

For Ukraine, IBAN consists of 29 alphanumeric characters: a country code, a check digit, a bank code, and an account number.

As a result of the introduction of IBAN, the first two letters can immediately determine the country – participant of the settlement (UA – Ukraine), and with the help of the check digit a unified check of the customer’s account for its correctness is provided.
